A positive evaluation of the collaborative work between the Public Prosecutor's Office and the National Customs Service of Chile was made during his visit to the Tarapacá region on national prosecutor, Jorge Abbott CharmeIn this regard, the official stressed the need to focus on investigations against criminal organizations dedicated to smuggling prohibited species.
During his visit to the region, after the inauguration of the Pozo Almonte Prosecutor's Office building, Abbott Charme referred to the work developed with Customs“The relationship between both institutions is essential to be able to advance in complex investigations that are fundamentally related to organized crime, with criminal phenomena as complex as smuggling and drug trafficking. Consequently, a very coordinated and joint work between both institutions is essential,” he explained.
The lawyer also said: “We see the contribution of the National Customs Service as an essential input for the success of our investigations and we would like Customs to have all the resources required for proper inspection of the merchandise and all the elements that enter and leave the country, where they often hide products whose commercialization is punishable by law.” In this regard, he emphasized the need for Greater technology to provide the necessary supplies to bring to justice persons who commit crimes linked to or protected by commercial activity in respect of which Customs has a special function.
In this same area, the prosecutor said that it is very important to achieve a balance between inspection and the natural flow of trade, which is very active and intense, and said that “the National Customs Service must have the elements that allow it to inspect a significant percentage of the merchandise that passes through the primary zone. If we do not want customs inspection to hinder economic activity, we must provide the National Customs Service with all the technological elements that allow it to carry out a much more intense and comprehensive inspection.”
Finally, regarding the penalty assigned to smuggling, which is low compared to other crimes - despite the fact that in 2014 it was increased by one degree - the national prosecutor urged: "We must focus primarily on criminal organizations that are dedicated precisely to the smuggling of prohibited species, which are those that generate the greatest danger for the coexistence of our society and also in sister countries."
