-

The Chilean government announced this Tuesday (19.05.2020/XNUMX/XNUMX) the start of citrus exports to the Chinese market, which will grant New opportunities for producers of oranges, clementines, mandarins and lemons, among other acidic fruits produced in the trans-Andean country.

«This health opening work has become one of the fastest negotiations that Chile has had, and will allow us to better respond to the needs demanded by the new times."Agriculture Minister Antonio Walker told reporters.

According to the minister, the arrival of citrus fruits to China will allow for the diversification of markets and benefit local farmers, mainly in the regions of Coquimbo (36,5 percent), Valparaíso (31,2 percent) and Metropolitana (16,1 percent), which concentrate the production of acidic fruits at a national level.

Negotiations for the opening of citrus fruit exports began in November 2018 with the delivery of information on these local products to China during Walker's official visit to that country.

According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, the southern country exported 336.000 tons of citrus fruits last year, of which 84,4 percent went to the United States.

Between January and April 2020, Chile's total exports reached US$23.665 billion, with China being the main buyer with a 33,6 percent share, according to figures from the Chilean Customs Service.
