Chile: Customs modifies Primary Zone in the Port of Iquique

-

As a way to support port development and adjust to the new traffic flows required by the northern terminal, the National Customs Service modified the perimeter of its Primary Zone in the port of Iquique, the Chilean agency reported.

According to the statement, the decision was made after analyzing the request submitted by the Iquique Port Company and that aims at optimizing transit and storage areas. This is how, through Exempt Resolution No. 3525, the old delimitation that had been in force since 2007 was rendered ineffective. Likewise, the Iquique Terminal Internacional concessionaire will also be subject to this new layout and new Customs offices will be enabled for this purpose.

The Regional Director of the Iquique Customs, Cristian Molina Silva, explained that the Primary Zone is a legally defined concept by the Customs Ordinance and which refers to the space of sea or land where material operations of goods are carried out for their exit or entry into the national territory.

"In this space, customs authority prevails, which is the set of powers that the Service has to control goods and people in order to comply with legal provisions and provide security to the logistics chain and the community.".

Molina Silva added that the new primary zone is located in what is now known as site 6 and the new vehicular flow will limit truck traffic to the southern edge of the former Serrano Island.

"In practical terms, will have a single income and for this purpose the Port Company is enabling the road, measuring platforms and a structure that will house the facilities for Customs officials and the SAG”.

The works for the fitting out of offices are in full development and “We carried out an inspection visit to find out the progress, confirming that the execution is progressing as estimated.", said Molina, who highlighted the positive effects that the new control area will have in favor of the supervision and facilitation of processes.

Likewise, the new design will modify the flows for the tendered sector of Iquique Terminal Internacional, which has new offices to house the Customs operational teams in that area, as well as for the Risk Analysis Unit that also operates in the port.

"After visiting and verifying the progress at Epi, we went to Iti and checked the facilities that will be occupied by our officials, verifying that they meet the standards required for efficient control and the proper stay of colleagues."He finished.
