Seven hundred used batteries without documentation, a Peruvian truck driver wanted to enter Chile. The operation took place at the Quillagua outpost (northern Chile).
"This procedure responds to the role of Customs in protecting the community to prevent all types of smuggling, especially those linked to goods harmful to health," said the Regional Director of the Iquique Customs, Dennys Beltrand Santos.
Crime of smuggling
The official explained that the crime of smuggling is committed when the goods are not presented to Customs or false declarations are made, as defined in article 168 of the Chilean Customs Ordinance. In this case, the Basel Convention on cross-border control of goods was also applied. hazardous waste, and the Health and Environment regulations that govern the transfer of this type of products that contain lead and acid.
The incident became evident when the driver arrived at the Quillagua outpost in a Volvo truck from Antofagasta. The man declared that the tires were used. The officers proceeded to check the cargo, seizing 700 used batteries from vehicles of different sizes, without documentation proving their origin or destination.
Following the inspection, the driver was arrested, while the cargo and the truck were seized.
