Chile: Arica Customs collects more than US$ 1 million in legal proceedings

-

The Arica Customs Office managed to collect more than one million dollars in favor of the treasury during 2019 through alternative routes where the accused accepted their guilt and paid fines and the taxes they tried to avoid. The figure represents a growth of 79,6% compared to 2018.

The Regional Director of the Arica Customs, Osvaldo Osorio Iglesias, said that through the administrative measure called Waiver of Criminal Proceedings raised a total of US$2019 during 1.150.421, that is, 865 million 231 thousand pesos that entered directly into the fiscal coffers.

Osorio Iglesias explained that the waiver of criminal action is an alternative and administrative solution to the criminal conflict. It operates under the logic of reducing time and costs for those involved, thus allowing for greater fluidity in the system and faster resolutions. Repeat offenders or those who have been caught with contraband goods subject to special taxation, such as cigarettes and alcohol, are excluded from this option.”

Likewise, during 2019 the Legal Advisory Department of Arica managed to 26 favorable rulings in smuggling cases which involved prison sentences and fines. In most cases, the smuggling of cigarettes was involved, and in addition to the destruction of the goods, the vehicles used in the illegal activities were confiscated, which will later be sold at public auction.

Osorio also highlighted the Coordinated work with the police, the Internal Revenue Service (SII) and the Public Prosecutor's Office, since in many of the cases brought to court other crimes such as money laundering and clandestine trading were proven.

"This joint work allows for better criminal prosecution and a frontal attack on all those involved in crimes associated with the smuggling of goods.”, he finished.
