The National Service for Food Safety and Quality (Senasa) certified the health and quality of 20 tons of walnuts destined for export in the province of San Juan.
The exporting establishment has more than 120 hectares planted with walnuts, a processing and packaging plant, located in the department of Calingasta, more than 180 kilometers from the city of San Juan, very close to the Andes mountain range.
The entire certification procedure was framed within the current regulations, which allows producers to market their products internationally with the guarantee of health and quality in shipments.
Cuyo Region
The Cuyo region has the largest cultivated area of walnut trees in Argentina and there is significant development in the province of Mendoza, with 5.242 hectares, followed by La Rioja, with 3.100 hectares, according to 2017 data.
In the country, the main provinces that produce walnuts are Catamarca and Mendoza, followed by La Rioja, San Juan, Neuquén and Río Negro.
Main destinations
Total exports of walnuts certified by Senasa in 2017 amounted to 3.201 tons. The main destinations were: Italy with 1.780 tons, Holland with 383 tons and Turkey with 301 tons. Also, Brazil, France and the United Arab Emirates.
