-

Hundreds of people gathered at the headquarters of the World Customs Organization (WCO) on December 14 to pay tribute to Secretary-General Dr. Kunio Mikuriya, whose term of office is about to end.

WCO Secretariat staff, Ambassadors and Customs Attachés based in Brussels attended the emotional event, according to the statement released today (26.12.2023) by the Organization.

The meeting was a tribute to Dr. Mikuriya's tenure and achievements after 22 years of service. The event also featured a heartfelt farewell address by Mr. Kristian Vanderwaeren, Director General of Belgian Customs. On behalf of the WCO host administration, Vanderwaeren praised Dr. Mikuriya's significant contributions to the international customs community and extended his best wishes to him and his family for their future endeavours.

The OMA said that the more than 200 participants also enjoyed an interesting musical performance by the Belgian band. The evening was also enhanced by a selection of Japanese cuisine and drinks, carefully provided by Dr. Mikuriya and his team, thus adding a personal touch to the event.

The farewell event thus provided an opportunity for colleagues and peers to express their appreciation for Dr. Mikuriya’s leadership and reflect on his impact within the WCO community, highlighting the collaborative spirit and professional respect that define the Organization.

Dr. Kunio Mikuriya is the eighth Secretary General of the WCO. He took office on 1 January 2008 and has been re-elected twice. His term will end on 31 December 2023. He will return to Japan next month.
