El President of the Development Bank of Latin America-CAF, Sergio Díaz-Granados, called on Tuesday (13.09.2022/XNUMX/XNUMX) for greater political will on the part of Latin American governments to accelerate productive integration in the region.
"We have a number of projects and diagnoses underway that require, above all, political will to move them forward," said the leader of the institution - which brings together 21 countries and 13 commercial banks - during the opening of a series of presentations in Caracas, where the CAF has its headquarters.
He explained that he has evaluated, in conversations with foreign ministers of the region, possible actions for the improvement of the borders that range "from bridges to waterways, including energy and gas connections."
To achieve this, he insisted, it is necessary to "move from vision to action" and "from planning to implementation," which is why CAF is supporting projects that are agile, easy to implement, have an impact on regional integration, are effectively coordinated and are sustainable.
As major current challenges, Díaz-Granados highlighted the need to develop greater infrastructure for the physical and functional integration of Latin America, as well as to converge towards a sustainability agenda and adapt domestic and regional regulations for productive integration.
Furthermore, The institution considers it necessary «Reduce customs costs by facilitating tradeor» between these countries.
The "Integration processes require a lot of political will» (…) «we must turn the discourse into action», reiterated the president of CAF.
Regarding the upcoming reopening of the border between Colombia and Venezuela, which will allow the passage of vehicles starting on September 26 after being closed for seven years, Díaz-Granados reiterated CAF's willingness to support this process on terms agreed upon by both governments.
