The World Customs Organization (WCO) announced that Brazil joined, on September 5, the Protocol of Amendment of the International Convention son the Simplification and Harmonization of Customs Procedures, known as the Revised Version of the Kyoto Convention.
The WCO explained that accession to the Convention and the implementation of its provisions will help Brazil in its quest to further develop its international trade and improve economic competitiveness.
It also notes that, following its entry into force on 3 February 2006, The Revised Kyoto Convention, a legal instrument of the WCO, plays a fundamental role as a model for modern and effective customs procedures in the 21st century; as well as being used in the negotiations of Trade Facilitation Agreements (TFA) of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Thus, accession to the International Convention and its implementation complement the efforts of countries to ratify the WTO TFA.
According to the global body, key elements of the Convention include the application of simplified customs procedures in a predictable and transparent environment, the use of information technology, the utilization of risk management for efficient customs control, a strong partnership with trade and other stakeholders, and an easily accessible appeals system.
