Brazil to increase presence of soldiers on border with Venezuela

-

Brazil's government will declare a state of social emergency in its northern border state of Roraima to increase funding and troops there to help control the flow of Venezuelan refugees, Defense Minister Raul Jungmann said Wednesday.

Thousands of Venezuelans fleeing the economic crisis in the Andean country have crossed the border into Brazil in recent months. The local government said the massive influx of migrants represents 10% of the population of Boa Vista, the capital of Roraima, or around 40.000 people, complicating public services.

According to Jungmann, the Armed Forces will double the number of soldiers stationed in the state, establish a field hospital and create a control center to strengthen the borders.

Brazilian President Michel Temer traveled to Boa Vista on Monday to meet with local authorities and assess the situation.
