Brazil and Chile sign a free trade agreement

Brazilian President Michel Temer and his counterpart Sebastián Piñera will sign a free trade agreement between the two countries on Tuesday (21.11.2018) in Santiago.

Negotiations concluded exactly one month ago, also in the Chilean capital, and the agreement reached complements the one already in force between the southern country and Mercosur, a bloc made up of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, according to the EFE agency.

New sections

The agreement to be signed today will include new sections, such as trade in services and electronics, telecommunications, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, elimination of trade barriers, intellectual property and a chapter dedicated to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), among others not agreed with Mercosur.

One of the agreements reached involves the elimination of roaming charges for data and mobile telephony between the two countries.

The text will also include agreements recently signed by the two countries, such as a Protocol on Public Procurement and another on Investments in Financial Institutions.

Chile and Brazil

Chile is one of the members of the Pacific Alliance along with Colombia, Peru and Mexico and also the second main commercial partner of Brazil. in South America.

In 2017, trade between Chile and Brazil reached US$8.500 billion, an increase of 22% compared to the previous year.

Between January and September of this year, the figure reached 7.210 billion dollars, 13% more than in the same period in 2017, according to data released by the Brazilian Foreign Ministry.
