Bolivian President Evo Morales recalled on Thursday (14.2.2019) the Chilean invasion of Bolivian territory that occurred in 1879 and confirmed that the demand for a sovereign outlet to the sea is fair and non-negotiable.
"Just like today, in 1879, Chile invaded Antofagasta without declaring war, to satisfy the greed of its oligarchy encouraged by imperialist interests. Now the whole world knows that Bolivia was born with a sovereign outlet to the Pacific and that our cause is just and unrenounceable," he wrote on his Twitter account, according to the state agency ABI.
In 2013, Bolivia sued Chile before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, demanding a sovereign outlet to the Pacific.
Although the high court ruled in October 2018 that Chile has no obligation to negotiate with Bolivia, it admitted that there is a pending issue between the two countries and called for dialogue to resolve the dispute.
Chile occupies 400 kilometers of coastline and 120.000 square kilometers of territory that Bolivia claims.
