Argentina and Paraguay will inaugurate the International Passage over the Yacyretá Dam Crest on July 26, 2019, the Paraguayan Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday (21.5.2019).
"Today, the First Meeting of the Binational Commission for Technical Coordination for the Enabling of the International Passage over the Yacyretá Dam Crest between the Republic of Paraguay and the Republic of Argentina took place. The inauguration will take place on July 26, 2019, in accordance with the agendas of the Presidents of both countries, who will lead the event," the official text states.
The Binational Commission monitored the agreement reached in Buenos Aires by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Paraguay, Luis Alberto Castiglioni, and of the Republic of Argentina, Jorge Faurie.
The delegations presented the progress of the work and coordinated the actions for the implementation of this understanding, including the adaptation of the building, road and port infrastructure, the development of a specific Protocol for police and security control, as well as communication and connectivity tasks, taking into account the special characteristics of international passage through the dam.
The opening of the international crossing for the circulation of light vehicles and minivans with up to 24 passengers aims to promote development and boost border integration between the neighboring towns of Ayolas (Misiones) and Ituzaingó (Corrientes). through mutual cooperation actions that ratify the brotherhood between both nations, facilitating the participation of their inhabitants in social, cultural, tourist and sporting activities, the text says.
At the meeting, progress was made on the details of the security protocol, opening hours and others, which will allow the dynamics of the border crossing to be compatible with the maintenance work required by the dam itself. It was also agreed to establish a common protocol for communication dissemination for users.
