An Argentine delegation met with Japanese authorities in Tokyo to explore the elimination of double taxation through an agreement that also aims to prevent tax evasion.
The purpose was to begin "the first round of negotiations with a view to signing an agreement to avoid the double taxation and to prevent tax evasion", the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported in a statement on January 9, 2018.
The Argentine government hopes that such an agreement will serve as an incentive to increase Japanese investment in the South American nation, in addition to "the announcements of investments for 920 million dollars made by Japanese companies since December 2015," the Foreign Ministry added.
Buenos Aires and Tokyo are moving forward, in parallel, in talks on the signing of a Bilateral Investment Treaty and Customs Cooperation Agreement.
Argentine President Mauricio Macri made an official visit to Japan in May 2017 to meet with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who had already met the Argentine leader on a previous trip to Buenos Aires in November 2016.
That year, Argentina had a trade deficit with Japan of 292 million dollars, since exports reached 661 million, but imports amounted to 953 million dollars, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INDEC).
