Argentina and the US agree to expand economic and trade negotiations

Argentina and the United States agreed on Friday (02.08.2019) to expand economic and trade negotiations and boost investments, during a visit to Buenos Aires by the US Secretary of Commerce, Wilbur Ross.

The Washington official was received in successive meetings by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Culture, Jorge Faurie; the Minister of Production and Labor, Dante Sica, and the President of Argentina, Mauricio Macri.

Faurie and Ross held a working meeting "in which they highlighted the strength of the relations between both countries, recognizing the substantial progress in terms of investment, energy development and trade exchange.", the Foreign Ministry said.

Both officials "agreed to continue working to intensify and expand economic and trade negotiations, thereby strengthening the strategic relationship between both countries," according to the official report.

During their meeting with Sica, the officials agreed to "continue to advance in the trade dialogue" and "highlighted the importance of strengthening and expanding economic and trade negotiations and promoting investments," the Ministry of Production and Labor said in a statement.

"The growing relationship between the two countries was highlighted, as well as the progress achieved in trade and investment, and it was agreed to continue strengthening economic and trade negotiations," the Ministry of Production reported.

Sica said that "Secretary Ross' visit to the region and especially to Argentina is an important gesture. It confirms the good relationship we have had these years." and the work we have been doing together to strengthen it."

"We agreed to continue working to intensify and expand economic and trade negotiations between our countries, thereby strengthening the strategic link we have," Sica added.

According to official information, during the meeting, both officials expressed their interest in continuing to advance trade dialogue, including issues of cooperation, regulatory coherence, trade facilitation, digital economy and existing opportunities to boost exports between both countries.

Ross's meeting with Macri took place at the Olivos Residence, a meeting also attended by Minister Sica, Argentina's Secretary of Strategic Affairs, Fulvio Pompeo, and the Secretary of Government for Agroindustry, Luis Etchevehere.

The state news agency Télam reported Friday that according to the latest data from the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INDEC), Argentine exports to the United States in June reached $232 million while imports from that country totaled $514 million.
