Argentina and Bolivia strengthen strategy for locust control

Within the framework of the Argentine Fund for South-South and Triangular Cooperation, Senasa trained Bolivian technicians and toured various municipalities.

Argentina and Bolivia have strengthened their joint work strategy to control locusts in the border region.

Health technicians defined regional and provincial references to organize joint verification sweeps in the border area, and generate an alert system that allows early detection of the plague.

The measure was the culmination of a training course on locust control given by Senasa representatives to Bolivian colleagues and producers in the region, as part of the regional cooperation of the Argentine Fund for South-South and Triangular Cooperation (FO.AR).

Bolivian technicians were trained in Senasa's Pest Monitoring and Control System to be used as a database between Bolivia and Paraguay, within the framework of the Regional Pest Management Plan.

Representatives of both health organizations also exchanged ideas and analyzed the climatic and geographic conditions of the different regions affected by the plague as possible causes of the movement of mosquitoes.

An inter-institutional workshop was also held with other technical and research organizations where the current situation of the pest, research results, and monitoring and control strategies were presented. During the training, the research guidelines that Senasa has for the biological control of locusts and tucuras in Argentina were explained.

Finally, the technicians carried out verification tours in several municipalities, such as El Torno and Cabezas, in the Bolivian Department of Santa Cruz, where the swarms of locusts settled during 2017 and so far this year. The tracking carried out did not detect the presence of the pest at present.
