Argentina inaugurated this Friday (3.5.2019) the country's first sustainable airport, located in the city of Comodoro Rivadavia, in the province of Chubut, 1.745 kilometers south of Buenos Aires, the Ministry of Transport reported.
«The new building was built to meet high energy efficiency standards and will improve the experience of the more than 700 passengers who visit it each year."said the ministry headed by Minister Guillermo Dietrich, who inaugurated the modernization works at the terminal.
The investment in the aerostation was around 2.500 billion pesos. (US$55,5 million).
«After 45 years without investment, today the Comodoro Rivadavia airport has a new, larger and more modern passenger terminal, with cutting-edge technology and international standards of low environmental impact. The building was built on two floors, with high-quality materials, and sustainable processes from the first moment it was designed.", the official information highlighted.
Minister Dietrich noted that "In Argentina, very important changes are taking place. Today, after 45 years without investment, with all the governments that passed, we are inaugurating a completely renovated airport, the only one in Argentina that was built in a sustainable way; one of the first in Latin America. This is a project that was completed in two and a half years when we were used to the fact that the projects that were started were never finished.«.
The location of the Comodoro Rivadavia airport is strategic because it allows for aerial connection of the vast region of Patagonia in southern Argentina.
The project included the repaving of the central runway, taxiways and apron, the installation of a new lighting system, the construction of a new control tower and a new firefighting building. The terminal was increased from 4.200 m2 to 6.500 m2. In addition, the capacity of the vehicle parking lot was doubled.
Rising figures
In the first four months of the year, a total of 220 thousand passengers used the Comodoro Rivadavia airport, which represents a growth of more than 30% compared to 2015, according to official data.
The terminal is in the final stages of the LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification process, a distinction awarded to those projects that demonstrate commitment to sustainability and meet high standards of performance in energy efficiency and low impact on the environment.
