Argentina returns assets of Peru's cultural heritage

The Peruvian ambassador to Argentina, Peter Camino, thanked this Thursday (7.3.2019) the various Argentine authorities, institutions and personalities for the recent restitution of 92 pre-Hispanic objects, which belong to the cultural heritage of Peru.

At a ceremony at the Peruvian Embassy in Argentina, the Peruvian diplomat highlighted the exemplary cooperation that exists between both countries in the fight against illicit trafficking of cultural goods.

Ambassador Camino stressed that the protection and recovery of the Nation's cultural heritage constitutes a State policy and one of the most important guidelines of Peruvian foreign policy, as well as a matter of special attention in the work of the Embassy.

He recalled that in the last 4 years Argentina has returned to Peru more than 4,500 assets of our cultural heritage, which constitutes almost half of the cultural assets that the rest of the countries of the world have returned to Peru in the last 15 years.

For his part, the Secretary of Government for Culture of the Nation, Pablo Avelluto, and the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Argentina, Ambassador Gustavo Zlauvinen, who were present at the event, highlighted the event as a successful case of cooperation between Peru and Argentina, countries united by deep historical ties.

The Secretary of Culture recalled the Peruvian Supreme Decree No. 89 of April 2, 1822, commissioned by General San Martín, through which legislation was passed in favor of the protection of this type of property.

The Argentine senior officials also stressed the effectiveness of the application of international and bilateral instruments. in force regarding the protection of cultural heritage, which allow us to better combat the illicit trafficking of these goods.

 The assets of the Cultural Heritage of the Nation, which were exhibited at the ceremony, belong to various pre-Hispanic cultures such as Moche, Chimú, Nazca, Inca, Vicus, Chancay, among others, and will be repatriated to Peru for formal delivery to the Ministry of Culture of our country in the coming days.
