Argentina will export lemons to China

-

Argentina will export lemons to the People's Republic of China, according to the current report Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Nation, Luis Basterra, this Monday (16.12.2019) after signing the agreement with Vice Minister Li Guo, of the General Administration of Customs of China, which is the corollary of 15 years of technical negotiations.

The agreement guarantees on the part of the National Service of Health and Agri-Food Quality (SENASA) compliance with phytosanitary requirements and represents the opening of the Chinese market for the export of lemons after 15 years of negotiations between the two countries. Currently, sweet citrus fruits such as oranges, tangerines and grapefruits are shipped.

Basterra expressed his “pride" by "sign this protocol for the export of lemons to China, an emblematic product of Argentina”He also acknowledged the decision of Chinese President Xi Jinping “for his attitude of receiving products from the world that encourages us to follow the path of adding value to our exports.”

For his part, the Chinese vice minister noted that “This is a stage to continue growing” and assured that his country “is a strategic partner in trade exchange and we are willing to continue strengthening the bilateral relationship. Trade ties must continue on an upward path.”, while highlighting the “trust" that exists between both nations.

This new protocol replaces the document signed in 2004 by both countries and represents an improvement in the conditions of access for Argentine citrus fruits to the People's Republic of China by allowing, for the first time, the shipment of lemons from Argentina to that country.

The next step will be a visit by Chinese authorities to audit establishments and authorize them to ship lemons.

"This is a very important market for the Argentine economy and Senasa negotiated with Chinese Customs the requirements established in the protocol signed by Minister Basterra with Chinese Vice Minister Li Guo., said Paz, who expressed his satisfaction “with the professional work” carried out by the Organization now under his charge.

Likewise, the head of Senasa announced that "We have presented to the Chinese vice minister a series of products that are on the agenda and other new ones, which we hope to discuss in the coming months, ranging from dried peas to pork offal and sorghum for human consumption, among others."
