Argentina exports first lemons to India

-

Argentine lemons have begun to be exported to India. On this first occasion, the volume sent is 24 tons of fresh fruit that are expected to arrive at their destination in 30 days.

In a statement, the Citrus Association of Northwest Argentina (ACNOA) - which brings together fruit producers, packing plants and industries in the sector - indicates that India's high population rates and expanding middle class make it a high-potential destination for the food and beverage segment.

"Although lemon exports from the southern hemisphere to India are still small, there is a window in the counter-season coinciding with our country's natural season in which they are not incorporating lemon from any other origin and where we can arrive with high quality fruit at good prices."explained Pablo Padilla, president of ACNOA.

This is an important milestone on the path to strengthening Argentina's agro-export potential. It also represents a commitment by the productive sector to comply with all phytosanitary requirements of the most demanding destinations in the world. It should be noted that India only opened its market for "lemons," while access for other citrus fruits will continue to be negotiated, the citrus association points out.
