The National Government has carried out the first export of guanaco meat from Argentina. This is a pilot test. The load is 20 tons and the first destination is Belgium.
Sustainable management of the species
The Secretary of Government of Agroindustry of the Nation, Luis Miguel Etchevehere, participated in the city of Río Gallegos, Santa Cruz, in the shipment of Argentina's first export of guanaco meat. This is a pilot test on a volume of 20 tons to Belgium within the framework of the Sustainable Management program for the species, led by Agroindustry, Science and Technology, Environment, the Ministry of Production and Labor, INTA, INTI, Senasa and Conicet.
«This initiative seeks Evaluate the procedures, technology and potential for sustainable guanaco management "as an opportunity for the development of regional economies," said Etchevehere during the tour of the Faimali export refrigerator.
The head of the agro-industrial portfolio also noted that "the potential for long-term use of the guanaco as a tool for the conservation of the species. The Tests will be carried out on meat, leather and fibre with a holistic view "that allows us to care for them, recover abandoned lands and ensure their conservation and animal welfare."
Sustainable development of natural resources
In this sense, the Environment and Sustainable Development portfolio authorized an exception to the Guanaco Management Plan to carry the work forward, with up to 6 thousand animals that can be sold throughout the country and abroad, to evaluate the possibilities of derivative products.
Due to the extraordinary quality of its fibre, it has enormous potential (it has a fineness comparable to the best natural fibres, such as cashmere or vicuña). Meanwhile, its meat and leather can generate significant demand both in our country and around the world.
The aim is to develop an unexplored natural resource that will provide new opportunities for regional economies and promote the development of different value chains, such as meat, leather and fibre.
