Argentina will hold a bilateral meeting with Brazil to discuss the tariffs that the United States announced it will reimpose on steel and aluminum imports from both countries, within the framework of a meeting this week of the Mercosur trade bloc, Argentine Production Minister Dante Sica said on Tuesday (03.12.2019).
The Argentine Chamber of Steel (CAC) had requested this Monday that the governments of the two main economies of South America address the problem, after expressing its «"strong concern" due to the decision announced the same day by US President Donald Trump on his Twitter account.
«We agreed to meet (with Brazilian representatives) at the Mercosur summit (of presidents) to make a bilaterall », which will take place on Thursday and Friday in Brazil, Sica told reporters. Mercosur is a trade bloc made up of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
On Monday, US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross asked Argentina's ambassador to the United States to present his arguments regarding the reimposition of tariffs, Sica explained.
According to Argentine government data, steel and aluminum exports to the United States totaled US$700 million last year and have accumulated US$520 million so far in 2019.
Although Argentine representatives will meet their Brazilian counterparts on Thursday, The dialogue between the parties will have to continue with representatives of the Argentine president-elect Alberto Fernández, who will take office next Tuesday.
