Argentina increases use of electronic payment methods

-

The national government expanded the electronic payment platforms by adding the Payment Button and the Electronic Wallet as immediate electronic payment (PEI) transfers.

This is established by the decree 933 / 2018 published this Wednesday (24.10.2018) in the Official Gazette.

All terminals must accept debit card payments, regardless of the operator to which they belong, the text says.

It is recalled that the AFIP had reduced by 50% the withholding of VAT and Income Tax on all transactions with debit cards.

“The amendment to Decree 858 of 2016 is a very important step in promoting financial inclusion and formality in Argentina. It will give merchants more tools to comply with the obligation to offer electronic payment methods and more options for taxpayers,” said Federal Administrator Leandro Cuccioli.

QR and minimum amount

The Quick Response (QR) code will be incorporated as an alternative payment method starting in 2020, while the minimum amount for transactions will be raised from 10 to 100 pesos.

"The way to fight tax evasion is to formalize transactions. This is a step in that direction," the official added.

Validity

The regulations signed by President Mauricio Macri, the Minister of Finance, Nicolás Dujovne, and the Chief of Staff, Marcos Peña, will come into force on Thursday (25.10.2018).
