Argentina to host World Sugar Cane Congress

-

Argentina will host the XXX World Sugar Cane Congress between August 31 and September 8, an activity that will be held for the first time in the country's history and will be attended by experts from 80 countries and regions.

«The sugar industry is rooted in Argentine history and generates a lot of work in the development of its production, which is why the national government and the provinces of Tucumán, Salta and Jujuy are calling for this joint initiative, "This is part of our country's intelligent insertion into the world," said the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship, Jorge Faurie, on Thursday, leading the event's launching ceremony.

In the presence of ambassadors and foreign representatives, and together with the governor of the province of Tucumán, Juan Manzur, and ministers from the provinces of Salta and Jujuy, Faurie highlighted "all the economic activity that takes place in Argentina based on sugar cane and the opportunity that this Congress, which will be held in Tucumán, will give us to share with other countries information on new technologies, equipment and new forms of production to be more competitive."

Faurie stressed that "Argentina is working with other countries in the region on the production of bioethanol from sugar."", while ratifying "the commitment and constant work of the Foreign Ministry in each negotiation in order to obtain greater access to markets in different countries for Argentine products."

For his part, Jorge Scandaliaris, president of the Argentine Society of Sugarcane Technicians, local organizer of the event, recalled that "with three centuries of history in northern Argentina, sugarcane is energy, it is labor force, it is research, it is tradition, it is landscape and, finally, it is life. It is cultivated in the provinces of Tucumán, Jujuy and Salta and has begun an additional extension in Santa Fe and Misiones."

«Sugarcane is not just sugar, but is having an increasing importance worldwide as a renewable source of energy, and is gaining international recognition for the achievement of two fundamental objectives: "mitigate the negative impacts on the environment and generate bioenergy projects with significant economic and social development. These two objectives are key to the future well-being of humanity.", Scandaliaris pointed out.

Established by the International Society of Sugarcane Technologists (ISSCT, founded in 1924) and organized locally by the Argentine Society of Sugarcane Technicians (SATCA), with the support of the Argentine Government together with industry representatives and the provincial and municipal governments involved, this World Congress will be held for the first time in this South American country.

"For Argentina, being the host country for the first time will be an excellent opportunity to consolidate its agro-industrial identity at a national level and its sugar-alcohol activity at a regional level," the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed.

The World Sugar Cane Congress is held every three years. The last one was in Thailand in 2016.
