Amazon Web Services (AWS) recently visited Chilean authorities with comments on infrastructure and tax concerns as it considers investing in the country, a government source told Reuters on Monday.

The objections are known just when the announcement of the installation of a center by the American firm to process data of astronomy and business.

AWS Region Head Jeffrey Kratz held several meetings with senior Chilean government officials during a visit to Santiago last week.

AWS declined to comment to Reuters on the matter.

connectivity and security

Local and foreign firms have promoted multimillion-dollar projects in the area of connectivity and telecommunications, which has been accompanied by increased investment for dealing with cyber attacks in the banking sector.

During his recent visit to Santiago, Kratz told Reuters in an interview that Chile has the opportunity to take concrete steps toward greater digitalization.

«The Chilean government is beginning to really understand how (data storage in) 'the cloud' can be used as a catalyst for innovation"Kratz said. "We look forward to working with the government when they need us," he added.

The AWS chief's comments come after President Sebastián Piñera met with Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos in July to discuss strategic partnerships at a technology forum in the United States.

Tax

However, the American company has expressed some doubts about a tax on the digital economy that the Chilean government announced a few months ago, as part of a broad tax modernization.

According to the government source, AWS was interested in learning more about the matter and sharing the experience of other jurisdictions where similar taxes exist for the digital economy.
