The Icebreaker "Almirante Irízar" (RHAI) set sail this Thursday (15.11.2019) from the port of the city of Buenos Aires towards the port of the Tierra del Fuego city of Ushuaia, to complete the first navigation leg of the Antarctic Summer Campaign (CAV) 2019-2020, in which this ship will have as its mission the supply of the 13 Argentine bases in Antarctic territory.
The "Almirante Irízar" thus began the 116th Argentine Antarctic campaign, which will be under the coordination and responsibility of the Joint Antarctic Command, dependent on the Joint Staff, with the objective of "Carry out all supply actions for the 13 Argentine bases", between permanent and transitory, and the logistical support for the country's scientific activities in Antarctica.
The ship, which is carrying logistics and scientific personnel, will stop at the port of the Tierra del Fuego city of Ushuaia, where it will fill its warehouses for the first part of its Antarctic journey with a cargo consisting mainly of food, supplies and medicines, scientific material and fuel, as well as vehicles, spare parts, tools, machinery and boats, among other items.
The Joint Antarctic Commander (Cocoantar), Major General Justo Treviranus, stated: «We are preparing to begin a new Antarctic campaign, which aims to relieve the personnel who gave a year of their lives in supporting the sovereign claim of the Nation and conducting science in Antarctica.«.
"We are also going to replenish the bases, so that life is possible for another year in those remote, isolated and frozen Argentine latitudes.", Anadio.
«Behind this operation that we are going to face, there are men and women who dedicated many months to prepare each of the logistical actions that will end in precisely coordinated naval, land and air maneuvers, which will make possible the subsistence and imposition of man over the most hostile environment on the planet.", said the head of Cocoantar.
The order to set sail was given by the Secretary of Budget Management and Control of the Ministry of Defense, Graciela Villata, together with the Chief of the Joint Staff of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General VGM Bari del Valle Sosa, the Ministry of Defense reported in a statement.
The event took place in the North Dock of the port of Buenos Aires, where the Operational Commander of the Armed Forces, Major General Carlos Pérez Aquino and the Joint Antarctic Commander (Cocoantar), Major General Treviranus, also attended.
Also present were the heads of the Air Force, Brigadier General VGM Enrique Amrein, and the Navy, Admiral José Luis Villan.
