About the Residence of Uruguay

Located on the corner of Figueroa Alcorta Avenue and Ortiz de Ocampo, in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Palermo Chico, the Uruguay Residence is an example of avant-garde modernism, stripping away the classicisms that were prevalent at the time, a style widely used by aristocratic families for their private residences.

Built between 1937 and 1938, it was originally the home of Carlos Méndes Goncalves, an important collector of works of art and furniture who commissioned the project for his residence to Jorge Kalnay, a renowned architect of Hungarian origin trained in Germany and settled in Argentina from the 1920s. The architecture of the Uruguayan residence is part of the Central European modern tradition, which flowed to Argentina through various trends and schools by means of countless publications, at the hands of immigrant professionals, and through notable visitors such as Le Corbusier, Werner Hegemann, Auguste Perret or Alberto Sartoris.

Kalnay's work in Argentina is of remarkable coherence and quality and is made up of a series of houses and apartment buildings where the rigor of design, functional precision, construction quality, aesthetic values and urban integration are harmoniously combined under an imperative of modernity. He was the author of, among other notable works, the Luna Park stadium, the Broadway theater, the building of the then newspaper Crítica on Avenida de Mayo, and Villa Los Granados, in Don Torcuato, property of Natalio Botana (owner of the newspaper Crítica) where the Siqueiros mural was painted, now preserved in the National Museum of the Bicentennial (Casa Rosada).

In addition, since June 19, 2018, the Embassy of Uruguay in Argentina and the Consulate General in Buenos Aires have their offices in a building inspired by the French neoclassical style of the first decade of the XNUMXth century, which is located on the corner of Arenales and Uruguay streets in the elegant Recoleta neighborhood of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires. (Architectural review)
