Korean Customs will support the strengthening of Guatemala's customs modernization

-

Customs authorities of Korea and Guatemala signed a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday (30.03.2022/XNUMX/XNUMX), which will allow for the strengthening of customs modernization in the Central American country, SAT-G reported.

The memorandum aims to promote cooperation and technical assistance, allowing for the exchange of experience and the development of customs intelligence programs to combat smuggling and customs fraud.

The signing ceremony of the Memorandum took place in Guatemala City, with the participation of the Guatemalan Customs Superintendent, Werner Ovalle, and the South Korean Customs Commissioner, Lim Jae Hyon. The Vice Minister of Finance of Guatemala, Saúl Figueroa, and the Korean Ambassador to Guatemala, Chang Hae-Yeón, were also present.

This important document will allow SAT-G to replicate the best practices and advances that Korean Customs has implemented in terms of modernization of the customs clearance system, use of artificial intelligence and digital transformation by evolving from paper controls to modern controls based on information technologies, including digital documents with electronic signature and notification.

“These projects will allow for the strengthening of controls, reducing times and costs in favour of trade facilitation,” said the SAT. It clarified that the initiative involves an amount of USD 5,7 million to strengthen the customs risk management system and the transmission of customs manifests and declarations.

The risk management system is an electronic procedure that integrates and manages information, classifying high-risk cargo related to terrorism or drugs, and travelers who may be prone to commit crimes.

In short, the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding will allow for the deepening of cooperation ties between both customs administrations and access to SAT-G.a important technical assistance aimed at strengthening the modernization of Customs.
