Chilean Customs incorporates new artificial intelligence tool to intercept smuggling of counterfeit products

-

At the offices of the Regional Directorate of Valparaíso, the Subdirectorate of Inspection launched at the end of October the so-called Predictive Model of Intellectual Property Violation Risk, a tool that aims to estimate and determine the probability of occurrence of the risk of violation of Intellectual Property in maritime import operations.

The Acting Deputy Director of Oversight, Ana Karina Ochoa, commented that “having this new instrument will be useful to develop and implement more and better strategies for more agile and intelligent oversight, according to the level of compliance of operators and the country's priority risks.”

And he added that “this model, and its purpose, It is framed within the 'Security and Data Management'', a strategic guideline of our Service that is focused on the need to drive conceptual developments towards decision-making based on data mining and its analysis," adding that this "enables the implementation of a selectivity system based on analytical models and artificial intelligence (AI)."

This tool has been put at the disposal of the teams of the Risk Analysis Units (UAR) of the different Regional Customs Offices through the SAS Visual Analytics system, which aims to deliver high-level information in graphical mode, in an intuitive way and easily accessible through a web browser. With this, the aim is to be able to access a panel with relevant data regarding different operations that can be carried out.

This is in addition to defined criteria for carrying out an inspection action when appropriate, providing, in turn, complementary information for further analysis by the UAR teams.

Currently, the Risk Analysis Unit of the National Directorate leads the development of analytical models that allow us to assume the complexity and dynamics presented by the risks contained in international trade, this being a relevant function and consistent with the strategic definitions of our Service.

In this way, the implementation of this tool marks a relevant milestone for the development of customs work, since it represents, as a first stage, support for the work carried out by the Risk Analysis Units (UAR) of Valparaíso, Talcahuano and San Antonio, as well as for the different teams of the Sub-directorate of Inspection, providing useful information for efficient and effective inspection.
