The National Customs Service of Chile seized 25 exotic birds, these being contemplated in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The operation began at the El Loa outpost when the agents discovered and recorded that the driver of the vehicle received the species in Alto Hospicio (Tarapacá region) to take them to Santiago with adulterated documentation.
According to Chilean Customs, the case was discovered this morning (12.03.2023/XNUMX/XNUMX) when inspectors inspected a car that was trying to leave the Tarapacá region. When checking the trunk, they found a vehicle under the spare wheel two boxes and three cages with the species, who were visibly stressed and disoriented.
When the driver was asked about the birds, the man presented documentation that was not correct and could not prove their legal entry into the country, for which he was accused of smuggling and animal abuse.
The customs officers rescued a total of 04 Amazon parrots, 03 Australian budgies, 02 toucans, 12 macaws, 03 rosellas or multicolored parakeet and 01 Colombian parrot pionus menstruus. The species were placed under safekeeping and hydrated, after which the Public Prosecutor's Office and the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) were notified of the situation.
Exotic birds are protected by the CITES Convention, so their transport without the corresponding documentation constitutes a crime that is added to that of smuggling by not declaring it to Customs.
In light of the facts, and on the instructions of the prosecutor on duty, evidence was collected to charge the driver with animal abuse and he was placed at the disposal of the Carabineros.
