Chilean Customs officials managed to detect 900 liters of a dangerous chemical that was being transported in the trunk of a bus from Santiago to the city of Iquique (north).
The operation took place at the El Loa customs outpost, located 147 kilometers south of the capital of Tarapacá, during routine access control to the northern region, the statement said.
In detail, it indicates that 5 drums were found with 180 liters each of Tetrahydrofuran (900 liters in total), a liquid classified as dangerous and highly flammable.
In this regard, the regional director of Customs, Dennys Beltrand, said: “Although the merchandise was accompanied by a dispatch guide, safety sheet and labeling of the harmonized system of chemical products, Tetrahydrofuran is considered a dangerous material and cannot be transported on a bus because it endangers passengers and crew”.
For this reason, "our officers activated a security protocol to ensure the safety of the passengers and informed the Carabineros, who continued with the procedure," he said.
The Passengers were evacuated and transferred to a second vehicle to continue the journey. The merchandise, for its part, corresponds to the Pozo Almonte mining company.
