Chilean Customs seizes container with fake sneakers in Iquique

-

The National Customs Service seized a container full of counterfeit sneakers in the port of Iquique, which were destined for the city's Free Trade Zone.

The detection of the merchandise was achieved as a result of a risk study and international assistance. Customs said the items had left the Chinese port of Xiamen.

During the trip, thanks to the work of risk profiles and intelligence investigations, it was selected for inspection and upon arrival at the port it was intercepted by customs officials.

Thus, the inspectors found 287 boxes that, according to the documentation, indicated that they contained Chinese sneakers of the Rimax and K-Hui brands worth around US$60.

However, during the inspection it was found that 237 boxes contained a total of 8.038 pairs of sneakers that imitated logos, designs, letters and even the packaging of Nike, Adidas and New Balance footwear.

According to the regional director of the Iquique customs, Ricardo Aceituno, The seized products are said to be quality imitations because they consider boxes, labels and designs from recent collections.

"These products are used to deceive consumers and as customs our role is to protect citizens and combat illicit trade," said the official.

The commercial value of the cargo exceeds $253 million pesos and Customs has already filed the corresponding complaints and notified the representatives of the affected brands.

A series of investigations were also launched to establish responsibilities in this illegal act and an audit team was established at the importer's warehouse and determined that there was a shortage of inventory of US$89.973, for which a disciplinary file will be opened.
