Chilean customs detect drugs in travelers' luggage

-

This is one of the most important discoveries so far this year at the Los Libertadores border crossing.

Officials of the National Service of Chilean Customs made one of the largest marijuana seizures of the year at the Los Libertadores border crossing, when detecting near 12 kilos of marijuana in luggage of two Paraguayan citizens who were entering the Andean country.

The people were trying to enter Chile on a bus from Asunción through the Los Libertadores Border Crossing but were detected by a canine team from the Drug Unit of the Los Andes Customs Administration during the control of their luggage.

The inspectors subjected the suitcases to inspection using X-ray technology, confirming that both bags had false bottoms. Each of them contained 9 sealed packages, which when analyzed tested positive for the presence of cannabis sativa, with a total weight of 11 kilos 794 grams.

The Head of the Drug Control Department, Patricio Gonzalez, stressed that "this discovery is one of the largest of the year in the Los Andes Customs and It is the best example of the importance of mMaintain alerts in all customs units. It is also a good example of how effective coordinated work with both police forces and the exchange of good practices is, with the PDI in particular in this case.”

Regarding the modus operandi, González indicated that “suitcases with false bottoms are a means used across the board and are detected in all customs offices, from Arica to Punta Arenas. For this reason, we have redoubled our efforts to specialize in this type of investigation. Our canine resources are also essential for this, and the best example is that a dog that had recently been retrained for this purpose participated in this specific detection.”

By instruction of the Local Prosecutor's Office of Los Andes, both the illicit substances and the Paraguayan citizens and all the evidence were made available to the Investigative Police.
