El World Wildlife Day opens this Tuesday (03.03.2012) a space to raise awareness of the importance of protecting wild plants and animals, as natural elements that contribute to ecological balance.
These affect everything related to genetics, society, economics, science, recreation, education, aesthetics, culture, human well-being and sustainable development.
According to specialized literature on flora and fauna, human beings depend on the constant interaction and interrelation between all the elements of the biosphere for all their needs: the air they breathe, the food, the energy and the materials they need for all their purposes.
According to a group of international experts from the United Nations Organization In terms of biodiversity, it is estimated that 1 million species of flora and fauna are in danger of extinction in the coming decades.
As part of Customs' efforts to contribute to the preservation of global biodiversity, the World Customs Organization (WCO) has chosen the following theme for 2020: “Customs that foster sustainability for people, prosperity and the planet.” In this regard, the International Customs Day, on 26 January 2020, was dedicated to the contribution of Customs towards a sustainable future where social, economic, health and environmental needs are at the core of Customs actions. This commitment was reiterated during the recent WCO Compliance Committee, in Brussels, from 24 to 28 February 2020.
"It is very encouraging to see that customs administrations worldwide are increasingly recognizing the seriousness of environmental crimes and are implementing decisive measures in their national strategies to combat these activities. However, we encourage them to take further action and play a more prominent role in this fight as a matter of urgency. “said WCO Secretary General Dr. Kunio Mikuriya.
"The focus on sustainability for all life on Earth in 2020 is fully in line with the WCO’s annual theme, with Customs officials around the world urged to strengthen their efforts to ensure a sustainable, safe and inclusive future for all. The WCO will continue to support its 183 members in their efforts to combat illegal wildlife trafficking, as well as other environmental crimes.«He concluded.
In that sense, lCustoms is the first point of entry and the last point of exit, ensuring that every product entering or leaving the country, including products in transit, complies with legislation and procedures. Customs therefore has a key role in ensuring the preservation of wildlife and legal trade.
However, Customs alone cannot stop illegal wildlife trade, says the WCO. Close partnerships and collaboration between Customs, government agencies and other actors along the supply chain are essential to winning this fight.
