April 26: World Intellectual Property Day

-

13.115 patents were in force in 2017 in Argentina. This is the most recent data from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

The National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) is the applicant with the largest number of requests (12 in 2017, 8 in 2016 and 9 in 2015).

April 26 is World Intellectual Property (IP) Day. In the year 2000, the WIPO Member States They chose this day because it was the one that came into force, in 1970, WIPO Convention. Since then, World IP Day has been an exceptional opportunity each year to meet with those interested in the creations of the mind, all over the world, to discuss the subject and to demonstrate how the IP system contributes to the flourishing of music and the arts, and to fostering technological innovation that is shaping our world.

World IP Day is a day to highlight the role that IP rights (patents, brands, industrial drawings and models, copyright) play in fostering innovation and creativity. A balanced IP system recognises and rewards the work of inventors and creators and ensures that society benefits from their creativity and ingenuity.

IP rights provide the means by which researchers, inventors, entrepreneurs, designers, artists and other professionals can legally protect their innovative and creative products, and obtain financial compensation for their work.

Only when a work meets certain established requirements can it receive IP protection. A song or a movie, for example, will only receive copyright protection if it is original. Similarly, a technology has to meet the criteria of novelty, non-obviousness, and utility in order to be eligible for patent protection. Furthermore, to obtain a patent, the inventor is required to make the invention public so that a third party can exploit the technology.

E-Sport & Blockchain The NGO Bitcoin Argentina, together with Signatura, the most secure and resilient digital platform, will host a meetup to explain the importance of intellectual property in the digital environment from the perspective of users, developers and legal operators with the Blindex y Asociados studio, IUStartup and the Legal Hackers association.
